For Anne, With Love

July 17, 2008 Not long after my good friend, colleague, and mentor Anne Lipow died (in September 2004), I promised myself I would edit a festschrift in her honor. It would be little enough to do for the person who had more of a hand in shaping my career than anyone else. Besides, I felt like it might help me to deal with her loss. I have taken years to do it, but the book is now finally published, as Technology in Libraries: Essays in Honor of Anne Grodzins Lipow.

I was pleased to be joined by a number of esteemed colleagues such as Karen Schneider (who wrote a biographical essay that will knock your socks off), former UC Berkeley colleagues Ellen Meltzer and John Kupersmith, the globe-trotting Helen Hayes (from Australia to the UK and back again), Diane Kresh of Collaborative Digital Reference Service fame, and others of note and talent. Besides contributing an essay, I also wrote the foreword and compiled a bibliography of Anne's published works. The topics covered range from virtual reference that was a keystone of Anne's work, to web usability, lessons from the UCB Teaching Library, teaching technical topics, and others. However, all of them are on the intersection of libraries and technology, and Anne serves as a touchstone for them all.

As a tribute to the kind of mold-breaker Anne was, I spurned the traditional library publishers and decided to self-publish a hardback version through Lulu.com and offer the entire book as a free download from the book web site. After all, this project is about a lot of things but money isn't one of them.

Now that the project is almost finished (let the promotion begin!) I have come to understand that the process of producing the book didn't lessen my grief. But what it did was to provide me with more time spent in the company of my mentor -- through reading her writings, thinking of the kind of person she was, and putting part of her in what I and the other contributors wrote. I know this is trite, but it's true. Anne will live on through the many people she touched -- not only during her life but also the many people coming after who have read, or will read, her work. And now there is one more plank on the bridge to the future with her name on it.

Roy: Thank you for doing this. She was one of a kind, a terrific individual. This is a great way to help keep her memory alive.

I'm so thrilled that you finally got it out there! I know this has been a long time coming and from what I've read so far (your foreword and Karen's gorgeous and touching essay) it is a fitting tribute. What a wonderful way for you and others to reconnect with her. I can't wait to read the rest!
