In Brooklyn, the Haunt of the Hipster Librarians

July 5, 2007

Today's New York Sun, in an article headlined For New-Look Librarians, Head to Brooklyn, offers a twist on the typical "librarian image" story, finding hipster librarians (in cool glasses) in the trendy neighborhood of Williamsburg. (Actually, that's where they come to party; Williamsburg is getting way expensive.)

The article takes off from a Memorial Day party hosted by the group Desk Set (motto: "Better Read than Dead"), which takes its name from the fave 1957 movie and, of course, has a MySpace page. Though unmentioned in the Sun, as the party invite shows, there was a socially responsible component: those who brought a book to donate to Books Through Bars got a free drink.

The group will continue to meet and party and do their best to update the image of librarians. The article closes with a quippy quote from Natasha Cane, a private school librarian: Asked how she can tell the archivists from the librarians, Ms. Cane said, "Different gang colors."
