As libraries at even some of the wealthiest academic institutions experience budget contractions, SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) and the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) will sponsor a timely forum at the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference in Chicago: “Rough waters: Navigating hard times in the scholarly communication marketplace.”

The forum will be held Saturday, July 11 from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM at the Sheraton Chicago, Ballroom II/III. Among the panelists, ARL executive director Charles Lowry will provide of an overview of how ARL members’ budgets have been hit. Also, Ivy Anderson, director of collection development & management, California Digital Library, will advise on how “to evaluate the value of potential investments and offset some of the financial pressure.”

Emma Hill, executive editor of The Journal of Cell Biology at Rockefeller University Press, will describe how some publishers are recognizing the challenges facing libraries; the press in April froze 2010 subscriptions at 2009 prices, as have some other publishers. Finally, James Neal, VP for information services and university librarian at Columbia University, will analyze opportunities created by crisis facing the global scholarly communication marketplace,

The forum will be available via SPARC video-cast at a later date.
