When the editors at LJ first heard about the Library Society of the World’s informal counterpart to our annual Movers & Shakers list, we were amused—and rightly so. “This is supposed to be fun,” blogged co-creator Steve Lawson. But after reading through the librarians who have posted themselves as Shovers and Makers—the “award” is purely self-appointed—we’re mostly just impressed.
“Back in November, my fellow carping nerdboy, Joshua M. Neff, came up with a new slogan and t-shirt: Shovers and Makers,” blogged Lawson. “I liked the shirt and thought we needed an award to go with it–an award that would provide a fun counterpart to Library Journal’s annual Movers and Shakers awards. So with Josh’s approval and input, I built shoversandmakers.net.”
Shovers and Makers was meant to be “a little inspiring and a little absurd,” but we’ve found that those who have put themselves forth are certainly more of the former than the latter. Be sure to check them out. Of course, we agree that our class of 51 Movers & Shakers for 2009 are pretty great too (and, there’s even a little crossover)—be sure to check out LJ’s Movers & Shakers here, or pick up the March 15 issue of the magazine.
