On the Same Page: Jennifer Schember, Las Vegas–Clark County Library District

JENNIFER SCHEMBER Las Vegas–Clark County Library District

-- Library Journal, 3/15/2008

Throughout her career at Las Vegas–Clark County Library District (NVCCLD), Jennifer Schember has worked to turn a city of tourists and new arrivals into a community.

Of German-Japanese descent, Schember relishes her opportunity as community outreach and adult programming coordinator to honor Clark County's many ethnic and cultural groups. Deputy Director Robb Morss says she's “developed productive partnerships with each of the community's ethnic chambers” and dramatically increased Heritage Month programming, with additional Heritage months honoring the county's Asian Pacific Americans and Native Americans, seniors, and GLBTs.

In this entertainment capital, Schember's showmanship helps, whether she's sponsoring award-winning floats in heritage parades or high-profile events like the National Basketball Association's all-star career symposium and the mother/daughter makeover event with stylist José Eber. Over 26,000 people attended diversity events in the past year.

Whether in a one-to-one conversation, says Morss, or addressing an audience of 1000 people, Schember connects. Schember says her favorite success was the 729 percent increase in program attendance for The Big Read, featuring Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club. She literally got everyone on the same page.
