Dan Armstrong has been named Director of Cook Memorial Public Library District, Libertyville, IL. He most recently was Director of the Palatine Public Library, IL.
Howard Boksenbaum has been named Chief of the Rhode Island Office of Library and Information Services. He most recently was assistant Director for Central Information Management Services for Rhode Island's Division of Information Technology.
Don Buckley has been appointed City Librarian at the Cerritos Library, CA. He most recently was in charge of public services. Buckley came from the Westfield Athenaeum, MA, where he was Assistant Director and then Acting Director.
Lecia Eubanks has become Director of the Cherokee Regional Library, Lafayette, GA. She succeeds Diana Tope, who retired earlier this year. Eubanks has worked at the library for 18 years, most recently as Interim Director. Before that she was Assistant Director. The latter title most likely will be replaced by a technology person with an MLS degree.
Holly Ferkett, Director of the Pleasant Hills Public Library, PA, has announced her retirement, effective summer 2007. She has devoted 28 years of service to the library and has been Director since 1990.
Cheryl Napsha became director of the Public Library of Westland, MI, effective May 1. She was Director of the Bethel Park Public Library, PA.
Donna Parks recently retired as Head of Children's Services at Washington County Free Library, Hagerstown, MD. She had held the position for 34 years. Paul “Jeff” Ridgeway is the new head of the department.
Gary Shaffer is the new Director of Marketing for the Sacramento Public Library, CA, effective April 18. He most recently was a Reference Services Librarian at the County of Los Angeles Public Library. Shaffer is a 2006 LJ Mover & Shaker.
Linda Springer has been appointed Bureau Chief for the California State Library (CSL). She was Acting Bureau Chief since November 2006 and, before that, Deputy Bond Act Manager in the Office of Library Construction at CSL.
Obituary
Betty Jean Boulware, former Head of Neighborhood Services at Enoch Pratt Free Library, Baltimore, died on February 2 of respiratory failure. She was 58. She worked at the library since 1971, beginning as a children's librarian. She earned an MLS in 1980 and retired in 2006.
Joan Foster, former Chief Librarian of the San Luis Obispo City Library (SLOCL), CA, died on February 9. She was 75. After working in libraries in Connecticut and Massachusetts, Foster joined SLOCL in 1987 and retired in 1999. She worked part-time as an academic reference librarian until a few days before her death.
Molly Giles, former Head of Adult Services at the North Olmstead Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library, Parma, OH, has died. She was 81. Giles began working at the Bay Village Branch in 1975. She earned an MLS in 1980 and transferred to North Olmstead. She retired last year.
Virginia Stenberg, former longtime Director of the library research service at Encyclopaedia Britannica (EB), died February 17 at the age of 88. Stenberg was thought to be a model for Katharine Hepburn's portrayal of a research director in the movie Desk Set. Stenberg began her first and only job at EB in 1941 as a research specialist. She assumed directorship in 1947, a position she held for more than three decades. She eventually managed 80 people in eight cities.
