Illinois Library Association, MySpace Join To Promote Online Safety
-- Library Journal, 4/19/2007
The Illinois Library Association (ILA), which is fighting a bill that would prohibit all library access to social networking sites, has joined with MySpace to distribute free Internet safety bookmarks, beginning today, Illinois Library Day. The three different versions, aimed at kids, teens, and parents, address such topics as blogging (teens), cyberbullying (kids), and social networking (parents). They also will be distributed during National Library Legislative Day, May 2, in Washington, DC. We know there are legitimate concerns about the Internet," said Robert Doyle, ILA executive director. "We know, however, that the best way to protect children is to teach them to guard their privacy and make wise choices. Education will promote safe use of the Internet, not laws blocking access."
