"Smelly Six" Seek Reading Record

By Staff -- Library Journal, 8/15/2005

Starting with 72 hours of "Harry Potter" (the first five novels), six librarians at the Henderson District Public Libraries, NV, in June apparently set the world record for the longest reading aloud marathon. Patrons were invited to watch the "smelly six" as they read in shifts for 100 consecutive hours, apparently besting the 81-hour mark in the Guinness Book of World Records. To meet the Guinness requirement that an audience be present at all times, volunteers stayed when the library was closed. The librarians aimed to raise about $6000 for outreach to rural residents. They also maintained a live web cam and a blog: http://reading100hours.blogspot.com. The sextet should learn this month whether Guinness accepts the record.
