Hardware/software solution controls access through library card

Staff -- Library Journal, 02/15/2004

GIS Systems is tackling growing Wi-Fi needs with the introduction of Wireless Access Manager (WAM), a "complete hardware and software package that GIS configures for libraries to install on the PC."

Though designed for the company's Polaris system, the vendor-neutral package can interface with any competitor's SIP2-compliant system. Library patrons can access the wireless network via their library cards. But the system also includes a guest account feature that lets travelers and visiting business personnel gain temporary access. WAM includes a firewall for security and generates user reports.

Customers also can look forward to the release of Polaris 3.1 later this year. The updated system will feature a built-in course reserves module, serials prediction upgrade, support of MARC holdings for journals, improved MARC import abilities, click and go acquisitions capabilities, and inbound telephony to allow patrons to call into the system to receive information on their accounts. Also forthcoming is a new children's PAC designed with the assistance of children's librarians.
