Criticism of Burt Leads to Banning from Listserv

Staff -- Library Journal, 3/8/1999

Anarchist librarian Chuck Munson, who posts on listservs as Chuck0, has been banned from the Web4Lib listserv for violating policy in an attack on David Burt. Calling Burt an embarrassment, Munson wrote, "It is also laughable that Burt claims to be interested in 'protecting' children when he holds their free speech rights and rights to self-determination in such low regard." He also called Burt's ideas "tyranny and fascism." List maintainer Roy Tennant wrote that Munson's message was a personal attack, violating listserv policy, which states, in part, "Personal attacks such as name calling and personal insults will not be tolerated." Wrote Tennant, "I do not like doing this, but Web4Lib has a posting policy and it is my duty to enforce it." He told LJ that Munson "received a formal warning last year for the exact same behavior."
