Swimming, Treading Water or Drowning?

That's the question posed in a worldwide survey to  CMOs (Chief Marketing Officers) by IBM.  Today I heard a presentation of the results and...you want to laugh? ... the Big Guns aren't that different from those of us in little 'ole library marketing. IBM issued this report on the survey, and this opening salvo certainly resonates with me: "The digital revolution is transforming the marketplace. Empowered customers can see -- and say -- more about the organizations that service them than ever before. This revolution has also left CMOs struggling to respond." In my own words...how do you keep focused enough to have impact and not be -- what my mother always called -- a flea on a hot skillet hopping from Twitter to Facebook to Pinterest to print to web to email? I found it somewhat comforting to know that I am not alone. CMOs globally see four challenges as pervasive, universal game-changers: 1. The Data Explosion 2. Social Media 3. Proliferation of Channels and Devices 4. Shifting Consumer Demographics Every single one of these challenges are also facing libraries today. The report concludes that the vast majority of CMOs believe there are three key areas for improvement: 1. They must understand and deliver value to empowered customers 2. They must create lasting relationships with those customers 3. They must measure marketing's contribution to the business in relevant, quantifiable terms: capture value, measure results. I challenge any library marketer to read this report and not find commonalities with the likes of these biggest powerhouses in marketing. It is a small world afterall!
