The action in the second installment of Armstrong's series picks up a few weeks after the conclusion of
Omens, with Olivia still working to discover the truth behind the murders that placed her parents in prison decades ago. But a body in Olivia's car is a frightening reminder that forces still oppose her efforts. As her knowledge grows, so do her suspicions, and her mother's attorney Gabriel starts to look more like an adversary than an ally. This is a complex addition to the urban fantasy genre, with strong characters, a romantic subplot, and an emphasis on mystery. Though Armstrong provides enough backstory to entertain a listener new to the series, this book is best enjoyed after listening to the first. Mozhan Marno and Carine Montbertrand narrate respective viewpoints of Gabriel and Olivia, a performance benefiting from gender contrast.
VERDICT Will delight Armstrong's fans and lure new listeners into the urban fantasy fold.
