Award-winning photographer Smith and stylist Leevers (
Global Style) have created a title that focuses on decorating in a modern, innovative, and functional Victorian way. The book includes many historical facts and explanations describing life in the Victorian era (circa 1837–1901). With pictures and detailed notes, this title shares creative adaptations that employ a kaleidoscope of colors that one can pair with vintage and modern finds. Readers may be inspired by the designer and period pieces that are presented as well, but the authors do not emphasize that readers must have these to create their Victorian-inspired spaces. Many pages feature samples of Victorian tiles, paint colors, and wallpaper. A directory, resources, and index are provided at the end. Librarians should note that this book contains British English, and all the showcased homes are located in England. But some design firms and architects that are mentioned appear to have U.S locations. Cute bonus: the homeowners’ cats and dogs are also pictured.
VERDICT An educational read. Purchase where Victorian decorating titles are requested or needed.
