Margaret, Dottie, and Gladys are three very different friends living in Brooklyn on the brink of World War II. Margaret’s brother John has enlisted, and he and fellow soldiers William and Tom have formed a strong friendship. The women are working in jobs that were previously the domain of men, they are becoming politically active in different ways, and they live for the letters that come from the frontline. There is a Cyrano de Bergerac element to the book, which has one of the men writing to Margaret under another man’s name; they develop feelings for each other and it’s questionable how it will all end. Told through alternating chapters, this is a rather quiet book with some of the major plot developments somewhat telegraphed by the author. Stephanie Willing narrates as Margaret with pleasant energy. Steve Quinn plays Tom and excellently portrays the progression from enthusiastic soldier to war-weary veteran.
