In the universe where kaiju raze entire cities, there now exists a terrible plague. When infected, humans turn into kaiju and wreak havoc of their own. To combat these new terrors, there are three humans with special powers, the UltraMega. They can grow to the immense size of the kaiju to make it a fair fight. However, after a battle that leaves part of a city literally drowning in blood (yes, it is a graphic novel!), the UltraMega disappear and the world is left in despair. The story then picks up years later when new UltraMega arise and prepare for battle. Combining issues 1–4 in this volume, Harren (Rumble) conveys the brutality in this series. Stewart (Hellboy) provides the details of the grisly injuries. The first issue sets the story and characters in place while keeping the action in full swing. The following three issues move the story along at an excellent pace. The characters are fun to follow, with their sarcasm and emotions swaying between confidence in battle to fear in retreat.
VERDICT Highly recommended for all fans of Harren’s and Stewart’s works, as both put their best efforts into this story.
