The saga of the Metabarons is a science-fiction story featuring the political machinations of powerful families seeking to control a substance of vital importance to intergalactic society, conflict amongst the scions of long-held dynasties, and big ideas about the nature of good and evil, gender roles, and spirituality. It was created by Jodorowsky (The Sons of El Topo: Cain and Abel) and Moebius (Moebius Library: The Major) in their classic, The Incal. Jodorowsky has since teamed with various artists to explore how five generations of the Othon family have handled the responsibility of assuming the mantle of Metabaron to defend the universes’ supply of a precious anti-gravity oil from plunderers and despots. This final volume in the series depicts the vicious struggle that erupts between the current Metabaron, No Name, and his son Adal when the former renounces his title in an attempt to end the Metabaron tradition, despite the latter’s eagerness to inherit his birthright.
VERDICT Not a particularly great starting point for new readers, but so packed with magnificent action and trippy notions about human nature that even the uninitiated are likely to find something to enjoy in this operatic science fiction epic.
