Astrologer Fenton’s (Everyday Astrology for a Better Life) short guide simplifies Western astrology, breaking it down into the basic sun signs (most often used in mainstream horoscopes) and their attributes, accompanied by gorgeous illustrations. The book opens with an introduction to the astrological aspects associated with each sign: the elements (fire, earth, air, and water); qualities (cardinal, fixed, or mutable); and ruling planets. Each sun sign section further explores the sign’s relationships as parent, child, or friend, with topics like emotional patterns, marriage and partnerships, work, favorite foods, indulgences, exercise, colors, interests, family activities, flowers, and holidays. Following the description of personality traits are compatibility charts with other astrological signs organized in categories of domesticity, adventure, and passion. Many of the personality traits that Fenton lists are generalized, and some readers may see them as reductive. Rather than go into specifics on how people can calculate their rising signs, Fenton simply points readers to the internet for solutions.
VERDICT For true newbies to astrology, who are looking for easy answers about compatibility with others in their lives or help with rudimentary decision-making about their personalities and place in the world.
