Ewan's (
The Good Thief's Guide to Venice) latest may be the best in the series owing to the cleverness of the convoluted plot and the expert blending of suspense and humor. The British embassy in Berlin asks crime novelist/burglar Charlie Howard to find an item of considerable import without telling him exactly what he is looking for. While many listeners, especially those familiar with Alfred Hitchcock's
The 39 Steps, will figure out the key to the mystery long before the hero, Charlie's obtuseness, recalling that of P.G. Wodehouse's Bertie Wooster, is part of the fun. As always, the masterly Simon Vance excels at demonstrating both Charlie's deductive skills and his occasional confusion, and Vance's interpretation of an unusual character named Buster is especially delightful.
VERDICT Recommended for both fans of the series and those who enjoy witty comic mysteries.
