From Orange Prize–winning author Berne (The Dogs of Littlefield) comes a new psychological family drama about the impact of generational trauma. Therapist Lorna is facing her greatest challenge—the secrets of her teenage son and estranged mother. When Lorna’s mother needs help after a fall, Lorna and her son, Adam, travel to Vermont. In Vermont, Adam seems to come out of his summer funk as he helps to take care of his grandmother. Lorna’s mother, Marika, is as aloof as she always has been, but her friend Dennis may hold the key to Marika’s past. Marika’s perspective on the past gives Adam the push he needs to stop punishing himself. A trio of narrators—Graham Halstead, Jackie Sanders, and Devon Sorvari—help listeners track the changes of point of view throughout the novel. While Sanders and Sorvari both provide solid performances, Halstead is noteworthy for the authentic way that he portrays Adam’s teen angst and self-deprecation.
VERDICT Berne’s novel expertly highlights the internal struggles and effects of long-standing emotional trauma. A great selection for book clubs and lovers of drama, psychology, and family relationships.
