After a car accident that killed her fiancé and almost took her life, Cassidy Morgan started working from home as an accountant to better manage her recovery. The sound of a breaking window draws her to the door where her neighbor’s dog is waiting for her. She follows the dog back to its house where she discovers her neighbor collapsed on the floor. When she wakes him up, he won’t let her call an ambulance but doesn’t tell her it’s because he’s in hiding. U.S. Secret Service K-9 Officer Markus York was attacked at his home but survived. Now he and his partner, Ghost, are staying low while he recovers and his team hunts the person who stabbed him and murdered another officer. When Cassidy also becomes a target, they must work together to find out who is after them, and if their feelings are just a result of proximity—or something more.
VERDICT Readers who like novels centering on dogs will enjoy this fifth book in O’Fallon’s “Federal K-9” series (after Armed ’n’ Ready). The physical and emotional injuries of the main characters add impact to the plot, even though readers might figure out part of the mystery early on.
