This second entry in the "Firefighters of Montana" series (each written by a different author) centers on widow Jacqui Edwards and smokejumper Vincent Kingston. Jacqui's husband was killed a year ago while smokejumping, and she's making a trip to back to Montana to pack up her house and sell it to her stalwart friend Vin. When she arrives, though, she discovers that despite the sadness and the memories, this is home and where she wants to stay. She also recognizes that what she's feeling for Vin has progressed past friendship. Vin has mixed emotions. He's always wanted what Jacqui and her husband had, but owing to his foster family upbringing, he is convinced that nothing good can come to him in life. Becoming involved with the widow of a man he loved and admired is the definition of a disaster waiting to happen. Unfortunately (or fortunately), Jacqui has other ideas.
VERDICT Though these series titles have short page counts, Collins (Bought by Her Italian Boss) uses the backstory of her characters to good effect. And while both Jacqui and Vin occasionally dive into self-pity, the attraction and affection they feel come through. Fans of early Lori Foster will enjoy this romance.
