No matter what Abel does, he can never seem to make his dad happy. After getting caught shoplifting, Abel and his father get into their worst fight so far—one so violent and full of rage that Abel’s father turns into a tornado. Abel and his friend Fox make a run for it, but his father’s winds catch up enough to touch Abel, giving him the same power. Now on the run, Abel and Fox meet up with a mystical old man, a traveling carnival, a sassy mechanic, and a man who kidnaps and enslaves children. Is it even possible for Abel to escape his father’s curse and find a true home? In this beautifully illustrated graphic novel, Young (“I Hate Fairyland” series) pens a story about overcoming one’s past to find oneself and the notion of found family. Abel’s growth arc will tug on the reader’s heart strings, and the magical elements of the world are fantastic and intriguing. The illustrations and colors fit the story beautifully, especially the stunning figures of the storms themselves.
VERDICT Highly recommended for library purchase.
