Marijuana: A Reference Handbook

ABC-CLIO. (Contemporary World Issues). 2013. 330p. photogs. ISBN 9781610691499. $58. REF
COPY ISBN
Aimed at high school students needing research for papers or speeches that include the history of marijuana, laws aimed at it, and different views of legalization, this title offers perspectives, profiles, data, and documents and will also be useful to adults. It profiles 22 individuals and organizations involved with laws and the medical usage movement. Both sides are represented, but more of the material comes from the viewpoint that marijuana should be illegal. The accessible book provides clear narrative information, a chronology of the history and use of the drug, and an extensive resource section that includes books, articles, reports, and website addresses, each briefly annotated, which will aid the user in finding more quality content. The only illustrations are black-and-white photos at the beginning of each chapter. While Contemporary Issues Companion: Marijuana covers similar material, it is not as complete and is aimed at junior high grades. Understand Marijuana: A New Look at the Scientific Evidence is targeted toward adults and doesn't have all the data and documents.
VERDICT Any library that supports research for reports or that serves adults who need more information on the topic will need to add this title.
