New Yorker contributing writer Russell has curated more than 50 speeches (some of which are abridged) by prominent women, primarily English-speakers from the 1800s or later (though the book starts with Elizabeth I’s 1588 speech “On the Spanish Armada”). There are speeches here by Shirley Chisholm, Alicia Garza, Maya Lin, Toni Morrison, Michelle Obama, Sylvia Rivera, and Malala Yousafzai. Many of the selections are calls to political action or change, delivered as commencement addresses, Nobel speeches, or conference addresses. Each speech is introduced with historical context, and some are accompanied by Pinheiro’s vibrant illustrations. Back matter highlights 20 noteworthy women whose speeches were not featured, for lack of verifiable transcriptions.
VERDICT Originally published in 2019 as So Here I Am, this quick, inspiring read is recommended for purchase by libraries that don’t own the original release.
