Sherwood and Drake’s “Scales ’N’ Spells” series wraps up (following Wish) with a nonbinary main character, who’s obsessed with explosions of the fiery and sexy kind, and a normally quiet dragon who is talented with his tongue. Protagonist Nikki, a mage, isn’t sure what they should do. They helped save Ravi Burkhard, the only air dragon in the Burkhard fire dragon clan, when he was kidnapped by the Jaeggi mages, who were also holding Nikki as a hostage to siphon their magic. Now Nikki is living at Burkhard Castle and attempting to catch the attention of Gunter, the clan historian, who helped them escape captivity. But while big, gruff Gunter seems oblivious to Nikki’s flirting, Gunter is actually afraid someone else in the clan will see what a special person Nikki is and steal them away. As Nikki and Gunter work out their feelings for each other, the Jaeggi are planning to wipe out the dragons, unless Nikki proves to be the secret weapon to their downfall.
