Hope and her half sister Eden grew up among unreliable, highly self-absorbed adults. On top of that, the girls were kidnapped as teenagers and endured a week of sheer hell that left them physically and emotionally scarred. As a result, Eden runs away, and Hope leaves for New York City, envisioning a future as a playwright. Years later, Hope's safety net of housing, work, and income fall apart after she breaks up with her longtime girlfriend. These are big challenges, but they also afford her the freedom she needs to set off on an arduous trek to find her sister. She revisits family and acquaintances on her coast-to-coast odyssey. Nonlinear in style and somewhat uneven in pacing, the story includes a small narrative thread based on Hope's life within the artistic fringes of New York: Would she and her cadre of friends have chosen the creative life knowing the financial strain that might lie ahead?
