For 50 years (as we perceive time), The Master has been one of the most iconic and dangerous villains in the Doctor Who universe. The inverse of The Doctor, The Master is deliciously ambitious and cruel. However, a more recent incarnation, Missy, has shown the capacity for change—but how far can she be trusted? This volume finds her freeing the original Master from a space prison located in the distant future. Her goal is to use The Master to locate a fragment of the Key of Time, all the while passing herself off as a new incarnation of The Doctor. Doing this involves searching their shared timeline, ultimately resorting to callbacks from classic Who episodes fans will find rewarding. Casual readers may find this a confusing entry point, but Houser’s (Stranger Things) sharp writing provides engaging banter between the two Masters, and Missy’s Doctor impression results in a delightful skewering of the character. Ingranata (Witchblade) captures famous likenesses while breathing life into them with expressive faces and dynamic action sequences.
VERDICT Unabashedly geared toward fans who will no doubt love this volume.
