Months after being laid off, investment banker Delia Reese still doesn’t have a job in her field; she has been working as a cleaner to pay the bills. Meanwhile, Eric, her dreamy former coworker (and someone she wants to be more than friends with), landed another job right away. After another disappointing interview, the smart and talented Delia is convinced she is a victim of workplace sexism and that she could have any job she wanted if she were a man. While getting drunk with her roommates that night—her birthday eve—Delia says as much, and when she wakes up the next morning, her age isn’t the only thing that’s changed. Determined to make the best of her new situation, Delia takes chances, goes after what she wants, and learns that what she needed all along was confidence.
VERDICT This clever and funny first-person “I woke up like this!” novel is Aksel’s first for a major publisher. Although the wrap-up is too tidy, and she spends too much time describing what it’s like to be a man in the physical sense, her descriptions of Delia’s experiences as a man in the workplace are thought-provoking. For fans of chick lit who are able to majorly suspend their disbelief.
