Landscape designer Chapman (coauthor, Gardening with Foliage First) features 13 gardens across the United States that “stand the test of time and the taste testing of deer.” Each garden is broken out by location, soil type, growing zone, problem creatures, other challenges (such as terrain, slopes, or shade), and the top ten plants used, plus color photos and detailed layouts of each property. Readers can also try creating the container garden discussed in the 14th section. The remainder of the text includes a list of the designers, landscapers, and the product used, such as Deer Out; a metric conversion table; a short list of five other resources on the topic, the oldest one being from 2005; acknowledgements and an index (not seen). Some website references would have been useful.
VERDICT For experienced gardeners with the time and budget to design, purchase, plant, and maintain these landscapes, or with the money to hire a professional to do it.
