Journalist and nonfiction writer (How To Be a Grown Up; The Sisterhood) Buchanan’s second novel (after Insatiable) follows two heroines who have devoted their adult lives to making it big in London’s magazine world. Harri, a fortysomething widow, has worked tirelessly to earn the title of editor-in-chief of Panache magazine. Her unpaid intern, Imogen, is in her mid-20s and makes ends meet by working multiple jobs, sleeping with a much wealthier man, and writing a sex blog as a creative outlet. When Harri is passed over for her presumed promotion and downgraded to a virtual star-up magazine instead, Imogen comes along for the ride—and an actual paycheck. Together with their misfit cast of colleagues, Harri and Imogen uncover the seedy truth of the industry and find their true calling in the process.
VERDICT This title has definite The Devil Wears Prada and Bridget Jones’s Diary vibes, with a thread of sexually explicit content. While it doesn’t have the most original plot, it’s a quick and easy read that will resonate with readers who are navigating first jobs or experiencing career malaise.
