Certified integrative nutritionist Achindu, who grew up on an organic farm in Cameroon and moved to the U.S. as an adult, discusses the problems of the Standard American Diet and its resulting health challenges. Her book contains a comprehensive list of vitamins, minerals, and foods, along with their wellness benefits, and a growing guide to help readers find and eat what is in season. There is also a helpful portion about picky eaters and strategies to expose kids to more variety. The recipes are divided into most of the usual sections: “Breakfast,” “Snacks and Treats,” “Mains,” and “Sides,” plus a part about beverages. What this book does exceptionally well is take classic U.S. fare and give it a nutritional boost by emphasizing fresh ingredients, making it heartier and healthier in the process. Sweet-potato whole-wheat waffles, tasty omelet “doughnuts,” turmeric garlicky mayo, and beef and butternut squash chili are a few examples of some of the better-for-you recipes the author has created.
VERDICT In her first cookbook, nutritionist Achindu, cofounder of Yummy Spoonfuls Organics, shows how little changes can add up to bountiful and healthy gains, all in a beautiful, fresh, and creative guide.
