500 Great Military Leaders

This collection of short biographical sketches of the world's most famous (and infamous) military leaders includes profiles of monarchs, generals/admirals, and those who fall in between. Tucker (formerly history, Texas Christian Univ.; John Biggs Chair of Military History, Virginia Military Inst.), a prolific editor of books on military history (American Civil War; Encyclopedia of the Vietnam War; Persian Gulf War Encyclopedia) offers a heavy focus on 19th- and 20th-century British and American military leaders, but earlier figures and those from Asian, African, and other cultures are also covered. Entries chronicle the leaders' military accomplishments, their personal lives, and their influences on political, social, and economic affairs. The material was written by historians of high caliber and major references are provided for each biography. Color photographs, paintings, and sketches are offered for some of the subjects addressed, with appropriate citation as to sources. A detailed index appears in Volume 2, and each text has its contents organized alphabetically by last name.
