Any disappointments aside, the significant demand that Patchett’s text and Streep’s performance will generate is inevitable; whether starters become finishers could be a different story.
Patchett’s latest comes to life as an audiobook and is a perfect listen for those looking for heartwarming and down-to-earth meditations on life, love, and happiness.
Not all of Patchett’s characters, particularly Maeve, are fully developed or believable, perhaps because of the narrator’s own limited powers of observation; Danny more than once acknowledges his own lazy inattention to the people who care for him. Still, this is an affecting family drama that explores the powerful tug of nostalgia and the exclusionary force of shared resentments
Award-winning author Patchett brings humanity, humor, and a disarming affection to lovable, struggling characters who soldier on with decency despite the handicaps of their disrupted childhoods. Irresistible. [See Prepub Alert, 3/7/16.]
This collection of highly polished essays is an easy listen that also provides plenty of rich food for thought and will appeal to a broad audience. ["Patchett provides insight and entertainment for all kinds of readers, and this title will be an asset to any library," read the review of the Harper hc, LJ 10/15/13.]
Not a sentimental view of a primitive people, Patchett's portrayal is as wonderful as it is frightening and foreign. Patchett exhibits an extraordinary ability to bring the horrors and the wonders of the Amazon jungle to life, and her singular characters are wonderfully drawn. Readers who enjoy exotic locales will especially be interested, but all will find this story powerful and captivating. [See Prepub Alert, 11/29/10.]—Joy Humphrey, Pepperdine Univ. Law Lib., Malibu, CA
