This slow-burn, inclusive, friends-to-lovers romance highlights LGBTQIA+ and Black characters. While a much different pace from Alexander’s previous romance, Can’t Resist Her, the story is charming with realistic complexities that occur in budding relationships.
Alexander (After Hours Temptation) brings a real sense of Atlanta to the setting of the book, and her finely observed character work makes the happy ending feel earned.
While there are some pacing issues and the dialogue doesn’t always flow naturally, this is a romance novel in which the plot outside of the relationship is also compelling, and that makes this book stand out.
The narrators’ voices are music to the ear. Shayna Small moves quickly between the characters, creating enough distinction between them to make it possible to follow the story, and her alto tones lull listeners into the North Carolina of the past. Leon Nixon personifies Sweety, making his voice heard in the wake of his determined and strong-willed wife.
All four stories are exceptional in describing the time period. The plots are compelling, as are the romances. For all romance and historical fiction collections.
