Implementing Controlled Digital Lending Responsibly and Effectively

Controlled Digital Lending (CDL) has become an increasingly important need for many libraries around the world, especially in light of the global pandemic and the new reality of increased remote learning.
 

What is CDL?

CDL is an approach to lending in which libraries lend a digital copy of a physical resource in a “lend like print” manner. The Controlled Digital Lending by Libraries group, has set out three "core principles" of CDL on their website:

A library must own a legal copy of the physical book, either by purchase or gift.	The library must maintain an equal “owned to loaned” ratio simultaneously lending no  more copies than it legally owns.	The library should use technical measures to prevent the digital file from being copied or redistributed.

Ex Libris' goal is to enable libraries to incorporate CDL into their workflows if they choose to do so. CDL allows libraries to cater to patrons with differing needs and gives them the option to borrow books in a way which suits them.

In addition to CDL functionalities already existing within our solutions, Ex Libris is also planning to implement CDL within more of our products and has instituted a community based advisory panel of experts to help guide us in that process.
