Statista Market Research Resources

CONTENT Statista is a large database of one million statistics with three add-ons: Consumer Insights, eCommerce Insights, and Company Insights. The main platform combines market research and analysis, content and information design, and statistical data on more than 80,000 business-related topics from more than 22,500 sources in 170+ industries. Consumer Insights provides access to data on buying behavior and media usage worldwide, with an interactive online analysis tool for creating cross tables and customizing data. Over 1.7 million interviews representing 14,500 brands from 56 countries are included. The eCommerce Database compiles data from 20,000 stores and marketplaces in 50+ countries, representing 95 percent of worldwide e-commerce revenue. Company Insights provides relevant information on 60 million privately held companies and 50,000 stock-held companies from 200+ countries and 100+ industries. Global data and metrics are emphasized, although a sizable chunk of reports cover North American industries. Statistics are sourced from data provided by company partners and Statista’s own researchers. The dossiers, outlooks, reports, and studies that comprise the database are up-to-date and comprehensive.

USABILITY The home page is busy with attention-grabbing visuals and lots of menus, drop-downs, and links. At the top of the page are tags for accessing the database’s enormous content, including nine subject categories of statistics, six topical area reports, eight market outlooks, and thousands of company reports, plus infographics and global surveys. There is also a link to “Services,” where there are webinars, recordings, tutorials, aids for customizing searches, and tips for creating dynamic visualizations, all intended to help users maximize the database’s features and resources. Scrolling down the page, one will find links to trending statistics, popular topics, news and reports, outlooks of eight key market areas, daily infographics, and the 2022 consumer insights.

In addition, users can type either a keyword or subject into the home page’s basic search box to retrieve reports. There are no advanced search options, but search results can be sorted by relevance, date of publication, popularity, and country of origin and can be filtered by industry, date of publication, and region. Users can also select a format type: statistics, studies and reports, or market outlooks.

Individual reports include an infographic, a summary of the report and its source, links to other statistics on the topic, related studies, and popular key words for further research. Data in the infographics can be downloaded in PDF, PNG, Excel, and PowerPoint formats.

Response time is fast, and charts and graphics are detailed and easy to read. Toggling within the database is effortless.

PRICING Pricing is based on institution size, starting at $3,500 for the main platform and $700 for Consumer Insights and eCommerce Insights. Trials are available for all products.

VERDICT Statista is an outstanding resource but not the only option for high-quality business reports. IBISWorld and Mintel also provide business-related studies with first-rate content and high-quality infographics. IBISWorld focuses primarily on companies and industries in the United States, whereas Mintel, like Statista, has an international bent with a focus on market research topics. In any case, Statista has been well received by libraries since its introduction, for good reason. It offers wide-ranging and robust content, a plethora of ways to find the content, sensible links to key reports, and engaging visuals. Added features and the timely addition of relevant subject matter make it a significant source of consumer and market data.
