The Hayward Public Library, CA, opened its new Hayward Library and Community Learning Center (pictured) on September 15. The 58,000 square foot, three-story library is one of the largest Zero Net Energy public libraries in the country, with a rainwater catchment system that will save and recycle 500,000 gallons of water per year. Designed by Noll & Tam Architects, the $65.7 million project will hold 50 percent more materials than its predecessor and has added public computers; a Maker space; a digital media lab; community meeting rooms; a café; and a Homework Support Center. It is targeting LEED Platinum certification.

Yale University has completed renovations to its Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Library. The revamped space features more study space, reconfigured seating, two new librarian offices, and increased natural lighting. The collection has been revitalized as well; more than 35 percent of the 61,000 volumes now in stacks on the library’s lower level are new, with a focus on previously underrepresented disciplines. University Librarian Susan Gibbons plans to add up to 3,000 new titles a year.

After convening a series of focus groups to gather community input, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, NC, unveiled design plans on November 7 for its $100 million Main Library, launching a public fundraising campaign at the same time. The 80,000 square foot facility is part of the county’s capital improvement plan to reinvigorate Charlotte’s uptown area. During construction, a 22,565 square foot temporary space will support library operations. Mecklenburg County has committed $65 million in public funding.
