The ACT test is used for college admissions and includes a direct writing prompt. Facing a blank piece of paper and crafting a well-considered and well-wrought essay is never easy, much less when timed and with so much seemingly on the line. Practice can help, and this title offers much that will aid students. Weinstein (humanities, George Mason Univ.), who teaches writing to college students, begins by explaining how the essay is scored and offers tips for success. Subsequent sections address a range of essay prompts, analysis of the prompt (deconstructing an argument and considering multiple perspectives), and the steps necessary to write an essay that is nuanced and considered. Starting samples are provided in full annotations to illustrate the points learned. As the examples continue, Weinstein provides less and less content, giving students more and more space to practice and learn. A solution section offers answers for those who need more help. The book includes worksheet pages, so libraries will need to evaluate if circulation is possible.
VERDICT With a helpful approach, an optimistic “You can learn this” tone, and clear guidance, this is a solid choice for collections.
