Actor and author Stanley Tucci (Taste: My Life Through Food) tells the story of his life experiences in 2023 through a recounting of the foods he ate, as well as the company he kept and the places he went while eating. Tucci travels the world filming movies, attending charity events, and enjoying time with his wife and children, all while eating everything from escargot to eggplant and so, so much pasta. While some chapters are brief food diary entries, others are in-depth accounts of the family and friends, both famous and not, who joined him at the table. In this self-narrated audiobook, one might anticipate more dramatic flair from the award-winning actor, but Tucci gives a very sedate, straightforward reading. Though his candid critiques and complaints sometimes come off as pretentious, he also offers relatable stories, such as pouring his heart into the preparation of homemade pesto only to have his picky child refuse to taste it.
VERDICT This audio will appeal to listeners seeking a self-described “snooty” celebrity memoir that chronicles a year in the kitchen, and in a life. Recommended for fans of Ina Garten’s Be Ready When the Luck Happens and Tom Colicchio’s Why I Cook.
