Painting with watercolors can be quite complex. Understanding the technique of color application, how water affects the pigments, and the reaction of the paper to the moisture content are keys to success. Bakasova (
Four-Step Watercolour) offers a step-by-step guide to watercolor painting that unfortunately falls a bit short. The first part includes descriptions of materials needed, but photographs of brushes and set up would have been useful. Following a rudimentary introduction of technique are more than 150 visual examples of simple objects painted with two to three paint colors. Yet there is little guidance on how painters achieve the progression of color, and a novice would be lost.
VERDICT Best used as a supplement to more comprehensive instructional watercolor guides.
