McGregor (“Spookshow” series) takes readers back to 1987 for a creepy slice of small-town nostalgia. Mark Prewitt is a teenager working two summer jobs, when he and his friends aren’t hanging out and doing stupid stunts. The Farrow sisters, including middle sister Georgia (George), are the town’s pariahs, considered strange at best and reviled at worst. Mark and George’s paths cross when a prank gets out of hand; when Mark tries to make amends, the two teens end up bonding over books, folk magic, and their strained home lives. Mark is even invited to join the Farrow sisters’ seance to contact the ghost of their eldest sister. This story of young love unfortunately has a tragic end that changes all involved, especially Mark.
VERDICT This coming-of-age horror relies less on supernatural terror than combustible human elements, but features sympathetic characters and sharp plotting. Highly recommended.
