The examples in this book use historic patterns, fabrics inspired by those eras, and traditional hand-piecing and hand-quilting techniques, and a little bit of tying. Australian quilter Papas lists her favorite quilts as those from the 1920s and ’50s, and her favorite fabrics as those from the mid-20th century, and that influence is certainly apparent in her work. Papas gives a nice lesson in preparing and using templates, essential in so many of these quilts, and a thorough discussion of the needles and threads recommended for hand work. The examples are vibrantly colored, yet look like they may have been made by one’s great-grandmother. Most of the quilts are scrappy, with a single-color background fabric. A few use a more controlled palette throughout, and some are an absolute explosion of color and pattern. Smaller projects, mostly pillows, are presented for those who are yearning to return to a slower pace but are unsure of the time commitment for a full-size quilt.
VERDICT Great inspiration and instruction for those wanting to return to the roots of quilting.
