More a memoir of seeking peace and enlightenment, rather than a guide to achieving peace and sanity, this title by Australian journalist Jackman chronicles her experiences with monastic traditions, both Christian and Buddhist. She writes about a silent retreat and juxtaposes the retreat’s insights with discussions of family issues and international politics. This book makes the case for reducing multitasking and ending chronic busyness. The most helpful section of the book is a “Silence How-To Guide” in the appendix, where Jackman gives advice for doing half-smile meditations, pausing, and walking into nature. Some of her best suggestions for readers seeking silence include planning a digital holiday and turning one’s workplace into a sort of library.
VERDICT Mainly for those interested in monastic living and a personal experience of silence.
