Designed to spark conversation on loving and trusting children, this anthology explores the ideas of consent, autonomy, and care. Presenting an alternate perspective on parenting, the authors grapple with adult supremacy and the historical roots of oppressive attitudes toward children. Inclusive in its selection of voices, the book looks at specific struggles of LGBTQIA+ children and confronts issues of race as well. The editors believe rooting out oppression will have the effect of stemming the epidemics of youth depression and suicide. The first group of essays start with the theme of home, which can either be a place of safety, warmth, and love, or a place of struggle. The next set of essays explore the school environment and alternate forms of schooling.
VERDICT It’s worth exploring this book’s seldom-discussed perspective, but the essays would have benefited from stronger editing and organization.
