Former Army Ranger Travis Devine returns as the hero in bestselling Baldacci’s third “6:20 Man” book (following The Edge). Travis is hired by the FBI to escort 12-year-old Betsy Odom to a meeting with her uncle, ruthless crime boss Danny Glass. Since the recent death of Betsy’s parents, apparently from fentanyl overdose, Glass wants to adopt her. Betsy insists that her parents never took drugs, and this leads Travis to suspect that they were murdered. He launches his own investigation into who wanted them dead, which brings him to a seemingly sleepy small town whose mayor, police chief, and police officers are corrupt and have a sinister secret agenda. A full ensemble of narrators offers convincing performances, imbuing each character with a distinct voice and attitude. Especially outstanding is Cassandra Morris’s portrayal of Betsy, who is transformed from a terrified, vulnerable young girl to a courageous young woman.
