Readers looking to develop a mini farm in their own backyard, even if they live in a suburb, will likely enjoy this book by Ragan, a small farmer herself and an online educator. Chapters encourage creating nutrient-dense soil, exploring the benefits of composting, planting seeds, and determining the best type of garden beds for the space one has. This book describes a variety of small farms and the most appropriate produce for them. It also gives insight on the perks of creating plans for small farms in increments of one year, five years, and 10 years. The author reminds readers that there is much more to gardening than growing vegetables; she encourages them to cultivate community and find ways to make their little farms a place for family to joyfully nurture life together.
VERDICT A great book for aspiring small farmers and readers interested in improving their gardens. Libraries with well-circulating plant and garden sections will not be able to keep this on the shelf.
