DeFonzo, in this debut, has written a fascinating combination of World War II history, European travelogue, mystery, and personal memoir. Her grandfather, Anthony “Del” DelRossi, like many veterans, didn’t talk about his experiences during World War II. When DeFonzo realizes she knows very little about Del’s wartime experiences, she embarks on a journey with him. Del finally shares his firsthand memories of the war, not only to her but also for historical posterity and remembrance. Her research takes a detour when she inherits a Nazi Waffen-SS diary from Del; the Waffen-SS was the combat branch within Nazi Germany’s military.
VERDICT DeFonzo worked for more than a decade to preserve Del’s past and the historical context. Hers is a deeply personal venture but also one of significant importance now and for all future generations to learn from. Recommended to readers of World War II nonfiction, history, and family memoirs.
