Once guarded by powerful druidic orders, Amarra is a land threatened by withering crops, remorseless scavengers, and eldritch entities. Exhausted by the endless political maneuvering and eager to make a difference, Kiana Paletine, the daughter of Amarra’s High Druid, sets out to reestablish the orders to save her dying world. Nearly everyone believes this task to be impossible. Worsening matters, Kiana begins experiencing visions of an ancient artifact that might prove Amarra’s salvation, but only if she finds it before the malevolent Deep Ones. Although promoted as adult fiction, Searcy’s debut fantasy novel seems to be intended for a younger audience, and the author makes no effort to hide just how heavily inspired it is by the tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons. However, Teralyn Davis’s narration helps this fantasy transcend its limitations, providing an engaging experience that makes the world and its distinct characters come to life. Davis seems truly excited to read this story, and her excitement is contagious.
VERDICT Fans craving a sweeping fantasy heavily inspired by classic Dungeons & Dragons will feel right at home in Searcy’s debut novel, which is reminiscent of Sariah Wilson’s A Tribute of Fire and A Dark and Secret Magic by Wallis Kinney.
