DEBUT A mysterious call from a high school friend sends Bill Sanders home to Indiana. There, he find the friend extremely drunk, his daughter missing, and his wife estranged. Once his friend sobers up, he tells an unbelievable story of space ships and abductions. A reporter at heart, Bill decides to find the truth. Then a local writer who had been investigating UFO sightings turns up dead and Bill’s friend is killed in a drunk driving accident. Rather than give up, he hires a research assistant and the duo trek across the country and to Europe in search of clues.
VERDICT Despite its short length, Brock’s tale is packed with backstory and consequently lacks the popular fiction pacing many readers expect. While not entirely without intrigue, the focus is on plot, and character depth and empathy are missing. As a result, Bill is neither likable nor unlikable, he is merely a vehicle used to convey a somewhat banal tale about UFOs. Not recommended for most collections.
