Based in the UK, the School of Life is an organization with locations around the world that aims to assist individuals in finding fulfillment through classes, retreats, and other activities. This book of aphorisms adds to the group’s substantial collection of publications and offers observations on a variety of subjects. Chapter themes cover relationships, self-knowledge, sociability, work, calm, and leisure. Each section contains maxims on particular topics such as anxiety, art, books, education, friendship, nature, and technology, with quirky illustrations by Avi Ofer. The sociability section offers excellent insights related to interpersonal relationships and coping with challenging individuals. The last chapter includes quotes from famous thinkers such as Pascal and Kierkegaard. Occasionally quotes found in this book seem ill-placed in their assigned categories (such as the work chapter) and might have made more sense assigned to other sections, while some aphorisms, such as those related to parenting, could have had their own subsection within a chapter but instead are often dispersed.
VERDICT An insightful book that could serve as part of a meditative routine or whenever someone requires some self-reflection to face life’s challenges. Some text originally appeared in articles on the School of Life website.
